Division 3 Side Sallins Celtic FC progressed to Round three of the KDFL Lumsden League cup on Sunday by virtue of their narrow 4-3 victory over Masters Division 1 side Leixlip United FC. They will now take on Portlaoise side Old Fort Celtic away.
Sallins welcomed Leixlip united to Millbank for what had all the makings for a great game Leixlip occupying joint top sport in the Ace Sports Awards Masters Division 1 with Sallins enjoying the same position in the Hill Mechanical and Electrical Division 3 with their mix of senior side and Over 35s.
The game started well for the home side and within fifteen minutes they found themselves 1-0 up when through some great build up play Rory Gavin found himself one and one and chipped the keeper a well taken goal to put Sallins ahead. The leaders grew in confidence and doubled their advantage five minutes later when a well delivered ball was met by Tom Carlisle from a corner kick to put them 2-0 up.
The visitors started to come into their own and were creating chances of their own but as they pushed forward on Sallins caught them on the break with a ball over the top from Sean power to the inform Tom Carlisle and he made no mistake to make it 3-0 and put them in the driving seat.
That was all to change soon after when a great ball in by Dave Moran was finished well by Robbie Martin with a good header for Leixlip to finally get on the scoresheet at 3-1. Leixlip were hoping to get into half time at 3-1 down and re group but wasn’t to be as Sallins broke on the counter attack with Richie Kenna playing a delightful ball to tom Carlisle who took on the Lexlip right back whipping in a ball to the on rushing Jay Grey who nodded home Sallins fourth to leave them going in 4-1 up and in control going into the break.
Leixlip came out a rejuvenated side for the second half Leixlip came out in the 2nd half and through everything at sallins and got a deserved second with a well worked goal and brilliantly finished by Robbie Martin for his second. Leixlip really made a game of it with their third soon after, a bit of a scramble in the box but when it fell to Graham Kiersey showed great composure to finish well to put the minimum between the sides. Leixlip had a couple of great chances to send it to extra time late on but it wasn’t to be. It was a very entertaining game that could have gone either way but sallins did well to come out on top and progress. Best for the winners were Tom Carlisle, Ger Murray and Ross Fallon.
