FAI Angela Hearst Inter League Trophy (Group 2 Series 1) - PREVIEW

Kildare & District Football League v Wexford Women’s League,

Mullarney Park Castledermot, 3.00pm, 3 Officials.

The Kildare League will commence the defence of their FAI Angela Hearst Inter League Trophy title tomorrow at 3pm when they take on the Wexford Women’s League at Mullarney Park Castledermot.

Ironically it was Wexford whom Kildare triumphed over in the Final of 2019 to secure the Trophy at UL Limerick on the 28th June in a tense penalty shootout. En-route to that final that year the women dispatched the might of the Galway League and the then title holders the Cork Women’s League.

The trophy itself was not contested in 2020 or 2021 due to the ongoing worldwide pandemic. It’s making a return this season with nine Leagues participating from across the Country. Kildare are grouped with Wexford and Tipperary (who they will play weekending 22nd May away from home). The other Leagues who take part in this year’s competition are Donegal, Galway, Eastern Women’s Football League, Clare League, Cork League and Limerick League, culminating in the Final which will be held on the 7th August.

Managed by Wayne Long open trials took place in Feb, March and a selection of 20 women were nominated to Represent the League from four KDFL Clubs, Sallins Celtic, Clane United FC, Monasterevin AFC and Athy Town. The squad have been working extremely hard over the last number of weeks training with some high intensity friendly games also taking place during their preparations.

The squad features some top young talent and is captained by Bernie Hyland. Thanks to Villa as always for hosting the game tomorrow, the spiritual home of womens Inter League Football. The Officials tomorrow are from the ISRS Kildare / Laois Branch with Billy Conlon in the middle, assisted by ISRS Chairman Alan Finn and Wayne ‘Bubba’ Doyle of KDFL Podcast fame. We wish Wayne, his Management team of Ray Travers, Emmet Fox and James O Connor and all the girls the very best of luck in their campaign.
