KDFL Under 20 Premier Division
Newbridge United FC 3 Suncroft AFC 1
Newbridge United FC 3-1 Suncroft AFC
Newbridge United and Suncroft AFC faced off in the KDFL Under-20 Premier Division in what proved to be a high-tempo and season-defining encounter between two title contenders. With both sides knowing defeat would likely end their championship hopes, the game began at a relentless pace.
Newbridge came out of the blocks quickest and dominated the opening 15 minutes, pressing high and moving the ball sharply through midfield. Suncroft goalkeeper Scott Doyle was called into action early, producing a couple of outstanding saves to keep the score level.
Newbridge were forced into a late change before kick-off when captain Keane Kennedy pulled up injured in the warm-up, leaving striker Patrick Dianconu to lead the line with creative support from Matthew Sherlock. After weathering the early pressure, Suncroft began to grow into the contest. Bradley Cox proved a constant outlet down the left flank, repeatedly finding space and delivering dangerous crosses into the penalty area.
However, despite several promising deliveries, the Suncroft forwards were unable to arrive in the right positions to convert the chances. The deadlock was broken in the 35th minute, somewhat against the run of play. Receiving a pass from Matty Sherlock, central midfielder Igor Halaczkiewicz unleashed a superb strike from distance that flew into the top right corner, leaving Doyle with no chance and giving Newbridge a 1–0 lead. Approaching half-time, Newbridge worked hard to regain control of the game as Suncroft looked momentarily stunned by conceding.
The second half began with renewed energy from the visitors, who applied sustained pressure on the Newbridge defence in search of an equaliser. Their persistence paid off in the 60th minute when substitute Bernard Ibirogba collected possession and unselfishly squared the ball for Rory Ryan to finish into an empty net, bringing the sides level at 1–1.
Suncroft’s momentum continued as they pushed forward aggressively. They briefly thought they had taken the lead when a well-worked move ended in the net, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
Moments later Billy Donohue appeared to have put Suncroft ahead with a powerful finish into the roof of the net, but celebrations were again cut short as the referee ruled a foul on the goalkeeper in the build-up. Those decisions proved crucial as Newbridge regrouped and began to reassert themselves in midfield, where Adam Kenny and Caolon Maguire produced strong displays to steady their side.
With ten minutes remaining, Newbridge found the decisive breakthrough. After a defensive mix-up at the back, substitute Lochlann Wafer reacted quickest, finding himself through on goal before calmly finishing to restore United’s lead. The result was sealed in the 86th minute from a corner. Matthew Sherlock delivered a dangerous ball into a crowded penalty area that caused chaos in front of goal.
Frustration grew for Suncroft late on, and they were reduced to ten men when Tadhg Hipwell received a second yellow card after an otherwise impressive performance.
The match finished 3–1 to Newbridge United, keeping their title ambitions firmly alive as they continue their pursuit of the league leaders. Despite the disappointment, this young Suncroft side — with the entire squad still eligible next season — showed plenty of quality and determination, suggesting they will again challenge at the top of the division.
