KDFL Under 20 Premier Division.
(By Jamie Connolly)
Old Fort Celtic FC 1 Newbridge United FC 3
On a bitterly cold, windy and snow-swept evening, Newbridge United produced a superb second-half
comeback to secure a deserved 3–1 victory over Old Fort Celtic in the KDFL Under 20 Premier
Division. Both sides had to contend with extremely difficult playing conditions, as swirling winds and
steady snowfall made flowing football a challenge throughout.
It was Old Fort who adapted quickest and drew first blood in the opening half. A well-worked move
saw the ball played wide before a dangerous delivery was whipped into the Newbridge penalty area,
where Jonathan Pukuta reacted quickest to poke home from close range and give the visitors a 1–0
lead.
United responded positively and looked to create openings of their own before the interval. A couple
of promising chances came their way just before the halftime whistle, but Old Fort’s defence stood
firm to carry their advantage into the break.
Newbridge began the second half with real intent, carrying the momentum from the closing stages of
the first period. Their pressure paid off when Liam Gorman found himself with a clear sight of goal and
made no mistake, calmly finishing to level the contest at 1–1.
The equaliser lifted United, who began to assert control despite the challenging conditions. Sustained
pressure saw them once again breach the Old Fort penalty area, and this time winger Ronan Collins
produced a moment of quality, smashing an unstoppable effort into the top corner to give Newbridge
the lead for the first time at 2–1.
Old Fort pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but their attacking intent left gaps at the back.
United capitalised clinically on the counterattack when central midfielder Igor found himself one-on-
one with the goalkeeper and coolly slotted home to extend the lead to 3–1.
While the weather continued to test both teams, Newbridge showed maturity and composure in the
closing stages. Strong game management and effective use of the bench ensured they controlled
proceedings and saw out another important victory in this year’s U20 Premier Division campaign.
Best for old fort was Jonathan Pukuta who was a constant threat to Newbridge united goal.
Man of the Match went to centre-back Jack Butler, who was a commanding presence and the pillar of
the United defence throughout. He was closely followed by Adam Kenny, whose tireless work rate and
energy in midfield proved crucial in driving his side forward.
