KDFL Under 20 Division 1
Coill Dubh AFC 0 Kilcullen AFC 2
Resilience vs. Numbers in KDFL Clash
In what will likely be remembered as one of the gutsiest displays of the KDFL U20
Division 1 season, an embattled Coill Dubh AFC fell 2-0 to reigning champions Kilcullen
AFC. While the scoreline reflects a Kilcullen victory, it fails to capture the extraordinary
circumstances of a match where the "Brave Eight" of Coill Dubh nearly defied the odds.
Coill Dubh entered the fixture hoping to build on a solid away point and repeat their
previous victory over the champions. However, a "perfect storm" of unavailability—totaling
13 missing players due to work commitments, injuries, and GAA conflicts—left
management with a skeleton crew. Forced to field a radical 1-5-2 formation with only eight
men on the pitch, the home side faced an uphill battle from the first whistle.
Despite the three-man disadvantage, Coill Dubh displayed incredible tactical discipline
and a "never-say-die" attitude. Kilcullen pressed hard in the opening 20 minutes,
searching for the breakthrough that many expected to come early.
However, it was the eight men of Coill Dubh who arguably showed more courage. As the
half progressed, they grew in confidence, frustrating the visitors and nearly snatching a
shock lead just before the interval. Their resilience left the champions visibly frustrated as
the teams went into the break scoreless.
The physical toll of covering the extra ground eventually began to show as legs grew
heavy in the second period. Kilcullen finally broke the deadlock in the 57th minute, when
a long ball from goalkeeper Fionn Coyle Connolly found Conor Curry, who finished to
make it 1-0. The visitors doubled their lead in the 68th minute through Daniel Collins,
assisted by Josh Kelly. Despite being two goals down and severely outnumbered, Coill
Dubh fought to the final whistle, refusing to let the scoreline spiral and maintaining their
shape until the bitter end.
Standout Performers The home side’s performance was anchored by three massive
shifts: Man of the Match: Will Carroll, whose work rate and leadership epitomized the
team’s spirit. Liam Murphy: The stand-in goalkeeper who pulled off several key saves to
keep the side in the hunt, also getting a mention from the referee for his exploits. Nathan
Jones: A tireless engine in the middle of the park who refused to be overrun. Man of the
match for kilcullen was Daniel Collins
Kilcullen AFC leave with the three points to bolster their championship credentials, but
Coill Dubh leaves with their heads held high. To hold the champions to a 2-0 result with
only eight players is a testament to the character within the squad. Management will now
look toward the return of their missing personnel, knowing that if they can match this level
of heart with a full XI, they will be a force to be reckoned with.

Terenure Rangers Assert Dominance in FAI Women’s Amateur Cup Clinical Rangers
Overpower Resilient Clane. Terenure Rangers began their quest for further silverware
with a clinical display of attacking football, dismantling a depleted Clane United side in a
high-scoring Round 1 encounter. Given Terenure’s pedigree—having secured two of the
last three titles in this competition—Clane always faced a daunting task.
Despite the lopsided scoreline, the hosts showed immense character, refusing to let their
heads drop even as the visitors' quality began to tell.
The tone was set early when Nikoletta Tóth found the net in just the 5th minute, followed
quickly by an Anna McGillacuddy strike in the 12th. It looked as though the floodgates
might open immediately, but Clane United staged a spirited mid-half fightback.
Molly Nason, easily Clane’s standout performer on the day, pulled one back in the 25th
minute to inject some life into the home crowd. The momentum briefly shifted when
Rebecca Devine found the net in the 38th minute, bringing Clane within touching distance
of an unlikely comeback. However, the "championship DNA" of Terenure surfaced in a
devastating five-minute blitz before the interval. Tóth grabbed her second in the 40th,
followed by rapid-fire goals from Niamh O’Donoghue and Lydia Kavanagh, effectively
ending the contest before the halftime whistle blew.
The second half was a professional exercise in ball retention and finishing for the visitors.
Nikoletta Tóth completed an outstanding individual performance by securing her hat-trick
(and eventually her fourth) in the 53rd minute.
The introduction of Ciara Moore proved to be an inspired substitution. Moore provided a
stellar cameo, bagging a brace with goals in the 57th and 71st minutes. Leeanne Dicker
also got in on the act in the 67th minute, ensuring nearly every Terenure attacker left their
mark on the scoresheet. Standout Performers Terenure Rangers:
Nikoletta Tóth was the undisputed player of the match, displaying clinical finishing and
elite movement. Ciara Moore’s impact off the bench added a fresh dimension to an
already potent attack.
Clane United: While it was a difficult afternoon for the defense, Molly Nason was a
constant bright spot, leading the line with grit and providing Clane with a much-deserved
foothold in the first half.
Terenure Rangers march on into the next round as clear favorites, while Clane United can
take pride in a battling performance against the gold standard of amateur women's
football.
