Connolly Under 20 Cup (Semi Final)

Newbridge United FC 2 Clane United FC 3 (AET)

Clane United AFC Triumph in Extra-Time

In a match defined by late drama and the relentless attacking prowess of Gavin Denton, Clane United AFC secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Newbridge United FC after extra time.  On a day where both squads battled difficult wind conditions, it was Clane who ultimately showed the resilience required to advance. The opening ten minutes were a tentative affair as both sides struggled to find their rhythm in the heavy gusts.  Clane looked the more likely to score, and they didn't have to wait long. In the 12th minute, Rian O’Neill delivered a pinpoint free kick that found Gavin Denton, who steered a glancing header into the net to make it 1-0.

Newbridge attempted to respond immediately. Matthew Sherlock found himself in a promising position, but a heavy touch allowed Clane keeper Calum Mooney to smother the danger.  Moments later, Mooney was called into action again, producing a fine save from a low Liam Gormanfree kick.

Clane nearly doubled their lead through Sean Murphy, but his effort was heroically blocked by Josh Flynn.  However, the pressure eventually told in the 42nd minute. Gavin Denton tried his luck from distance, and in a moment of misfortune for the Newbridge keeper, the ball slipped through Shane Farrell’s grasp to give Clane a 2-0 cushion heading into the break.

The second half saw Newbridge United emerge with renewed intensity. Adam Kenny forced an early "great save" from Mooney following an Igor Halaczkiewicz free kick.  Despite the pressure, Clane remained dangerous on the break, with Adam Millea testing Farrell and hitting the post in the 72nd minute. As the clock ticked toward the 90-minute mark, Clane appeared to have one foot in the next round.  However, the game was turned on its head in a chaotic final sequence. In the 90th minute, John Maguire Collins unleashed a stunning half-volley to bring Newbridge within one. With the momentum firmly behind them, Newbridge pushed forward in stoppage time.  In the 94th minute, a shot from Lachlann Wafer was parried by Mooney, but Cillian Lane was the sharpest man in the box, following in to tap home the equalizer and send the game into extra time at 2-2.

The first period of extra time was a tense affair. Newbridge’s Charlie Doyle and Matthew Sherlock combined well, but their efforts were thwarted by a disciplined Clane defence.  Clane thought they had scored in the 95th minute during a goal-mouth scramble following a corner, but the referee waved away claims that the ball had crossed the line. The decisive moment arrived in the 97th minute. Following a Cormac Hopkins throw-in, the indomitable Gavin Denton received the ball, turned his marker, and "let fly" into the bottom corner to restore Clane's lead. The second period of extra time saw tired legs on both sides, with the quality of play dropping as fatigue set in.  Newbridge searched for another last-gasp equalizer, but the Clane midfield, led by Shane Henry and James Moore, closed out the game to secure the 3-2 win. Standout Performers Clane United AFC Gavin Denton (Man of the Match):  A hat-trick performance that proved to be the difference. Shane Henry & James Moore:

Newbridge Town Edge Eight-Goal Thriller in Connolly U20 Cup

In a contest dictated by swirling winds and relentless momentum shifts, Newbridge Town FC secured their passage in the Connolly U20 Cup with a hard-fought 5-3 victory over Arlington AFC after extra time. The opening exchanges were a battle against the elements. Newbridge winger David Oduntan looked dangerous from the whistle, but Arlington’s Sean Kehoe proved a formidable barrier, clearing early crosses from both Oduntan and Darijus Peveraitis. Arlington had their chances early on, with Adam Dunne finding Kehoe in the box, though the resulting shot failed to test Jason Curran.

At the other end, Alex Dunne produced the first of many "big" saves to deny Jonatan Bocotan in the 12th minute. The deadlock was finally broken in the 16th minute. A sliced cross from Bocotan deceived the defense, allowing Airidas Peveraitis to slide in at the back post to make it 1-0.  Newbridge began to dominate, and despite a heroic reaction save from Alex Dunne to deny Aidan Prestreshi, the pressure told.  In the 31st minute, David Oduntan doubled the lead, driving home a clinical strike from 12 yards. Arlington looked rattled but found a lifeline just three minutes later. Lucas Coleman unleashed a "wicked" effort from 14 yards that found the bottom corner, sending the sides into the break at 1-2 and shifting the psychological momentum back to the hosts.

Arlington emerged for the second half a transformed side. Only two minutes after the restart, Thomas Keating leveled the scores with a sensational 25-yard "rocket."  The comeback was completed in the 52nd minute when Adam Dunne coolly converted from the penalty spot to put Arlington 3-2 up. The lead lasted until the 64th minute. After a brilliant individual run by Oduntan, Alex Dunne made another fine save, but the rebound fell perfectly for Jonatan Bocotan, who made no mistake from 12 yards to level the game at 3-3. The final ten minutes of regulation time were pure chaos. Both sides had chances to win it; Newbridge’s Ben Shanahan fired over, while Adam Dunne saw a late effort saved by Curran before missing another chance moments later.  Deep in injury time, Newbridge’s Bocotan missed the target, leaving the sides deadlocked at the final whistle.

After a tense and scoreless first period of extra time, the breakthrough finally came in the 109th minute.  Aidan Prestreshi reacted quickest to a through ball, pouncing to slot home and restore the Newbridge lead at 4-3. As Arlington pushed everyone forward in a desperate search for an equalizer, Newbridge put the game to bed in injury time.  David Oduntan stepped up to a free kick, which took a slight deflection to find the bottom corner, sealing a frantic 5-3 win.

Standout Performers  Arlington AFC: Zack Whelan (Joint Man of the Match): A rock at the centre of defence under heavy pressure. Adam Dunne: The engine of the attack and a constant goal threat. Thomas Keating: Scored the goal of the game to spark the comeback.

Michael Lutrell:  Consistent and composed throughout. Newbridge Town FC: David Oduntan (Joint Man of the Match):  A constant menace on the wing and provider of the winning goal. Jonatan Bocotan:  Involved in almost every Newbridge attack. Ben Shanahan & Cameron Keane: Controlled the tempo and provided the platform for the win.
