KDFL Lumsden League Cup (Round 2)
Newbridge Hotspurs FC 1 Newbridge United FC 2
United Hold Their Nerve as Coffey Steals the Show in Derby Thriller
Newbridge United booked their place in the Lumsden Cup quarterfinals after a fiercely
contested derby that had every ingredient you’d expect from a local cup tie: crunching
tackles, fiery duels, and a relentless battle for every blade of grass.
The opening forty five minutes were a war of attrition. Both sides struggled to find rhythm,
with the midfield becoming a congested battleground. When either team did manage to
work the ball into dangerous areas, both defences stood firm, snuffing out any hint of a
breakthrough. A goalless first half felt inevitable. The second half, however, was a
completely different story.
United emerged with renewed purpose, and just seven minutes after the restart they
carved open Hotspurs with a sweeping move. Jack Keogh burst down the right flank,
exploiting a rare gap in the Hotspurs back line. His perfectly weighted pass found Craig
Buckley charging through the centre, and Buckley made no mistake—slotting calmly past
Sean Higgins to make it 1–0.
The goal ignited Hotspurs, who responded with a sustained 15minute spell of pressure.
Wave after wave of attacks rained down on the United goal, but goalkeeper Jamie Coffey
was in inspired form, producing a string of superb saves to keep his side in front.
As United regained their composure, their front three began to click, stretching the
Hotspurs defence and creating chances of their own. With the next goal likely to decide
the tie, both sides pushed hard—but it was United who struck the decisive blow on 86
minutes.
Keogh, tireless all afternoon, capped his performance with a welltaken finish after
excellent work from Charlie Doyle, doubling United’s advantage.
The closing stages were pure tension. Hotspurs threw everything forward, and deep into
normal time they were handed a lifeline when a United handball in the box gave them a
penalty. But Coffey—ice cold and unshakeable—guessed correctly and saved brilliantly
low to his right.
Hotspurs did finally break through two minutes into added time, setting up a frantic finale.
United were forced to dig deep, but their resolve held firm as they survived three more
nerveshredding minutes to secure a massive derby win.
Every United player stood tall in a fierce contest. The back line was rock solid, the
midfield battled relentlessly, and the front three worked tirelessly to unsettle the Hotspurs
defence. Special mention should also go to the sideline and spectators who really got
behind the lads and gave them a boost with their support. A huge result, a huge
performance, and United march on to the quarterfinals. Standout performers for United:
Jamie Coffey (Goalkeeper), Matty Sherlock (Centre midfield), Charlie Doyle (left wing).
