Feature game - Leinster Leader

So Fresh Entertainment Womens Division

Allenwood Celtic 0 Derry Rovers FC 0

On a beautiful sunny, although breezy, evening in Allenwood, Derry Rovers AFC and Allenwood Celtic AFC played out a hard-fought and entertaining 0-0 draw in Killina road.  Despite the lack of goals, the match delivered end-to-end action, individual brilliance, and resolute defending from both sides.

Derry Rovers got the match underway and immediately made their presence known, with Kayla Ennis (10) embarking on a dynamic solo run in the opening minute, beating three players before being halted by Allenwood’s centre-back. Just minutes later, Chelsie O’Driscoll (8) slipped a perfectly weighted pass to Faridat Omoyayi (9), only for Amanda Moore (5) to intercept with a crucial defensive read.

Rovers continued to apply pressure in the 5th minute, when Aoife Tyrell (7) earned a corner after smartly forcing the ball off an Allenwood defender. From the resulting short corner, Ally Gallagher (11) attempted an ambitious long-range effort, which narrowly missed the target.

Allenwood responded in kind, attempting to exploit space behind the Rovers backline. However, Caroline O’Neill (5) was alert to danger, clearing a threatening ball coming in from over the top. The game settled into a rhythm, with both sides pushing into each other’s final third but struggling to find a clinical edge.

In the 13th minute, Ennis again impressed, holding the ball well under pressure and threading a through pass to Aoife, who forced a strong save from Allenwood keeper Stacey O’Sullivan a minute later. At the other end, Allenwood’s Chloe Donnelly (7) nearly broke the deadlock with a curling effort that rattled the post, before Emma Swords (10) followed up with a shot that was superbly saved by Ava Farrell in the Rovers goal.

The first half water break at the 22nd minute arrived with the match finely balanced. Aoife had a golden opportunity shortly after, breaking through the defence, but hesitation allowed O’Sullivan to close down the angle and make the stop.

Both teams continued to threaten. Faridat came close in the 30th minute, meeting a cross from Aoife only to be denied by O’Sullivan’s outstretched foot. Allenwood remained dangerous down the right flank, with Ivers, McGee (8) and Swords linking up well, but Sophiat Omoyayi (6) was repeatedly in the right place to block the danger.

Just before the break, Chelsie O’Driscoll picked up a yellow card for a foul outside the box, but the resulting free-kick from Allenwood sailed just over. The final moment of the half saw Swords go one-on-one with Farrell, but leaning back whilst taking the shot saw the ball sail over the bar. The whistle blew with the game goalless but full of promise.

The second half Allenwood started Brightly through Donnelly, whose footwork was neutralised by a well-timed tackle from Alicia Kavanagh (4). Allenwood earned a dangerous free kick on 49 minutes, but Donnelly’s delivery was cleared by the head of Orlaith Sullivan (3). Rovers responded with pressure of their own, but struggled to connect inside the final third, despite strong set-piece deliveries from Kayla and Orlaith.

Aoife continued to shine, embarking on a solo run in the 59th minute that looked destined to result in a goal, only for Katie Hand (2) to make a perfectly timed tackle in the box. Alicia Kavanagh continued her strong defensive display, cutting out a number of promising Allenwood attacks, including an important perfectly timed interception on the 61st minute and a clean ball winning tackle on Swords in the 69th – a challenge that sparked protest from the Allenwood bench, claiming a penalty that wasn't awarded.

In the 66th minute, a sweeping Rovers move down the right saw Orlaith break through and fire a shot on target, saved yet again by the inspired O’Sullivan. Another opportunity fell to Kayla in the 72nd from a corner, but her close-range shot was blocked by Allenwood defender Claire Ivers (4).

Allenwood pushed hard in the closing stages. A thunderous shot from Donnelly just missed the target in the 80th minute, and she nearly turned provider seconds later with a low cross that flashed across the goalmouth. Rovers weren’t finished either – Ally Gallagher’s volley was blocked in the 83rd, and Orlaith’s corner moments later hit the side netting. As Allenwood mounted one last attack in the 90th minute, Donnelly again found herself in space, but Ava Farrell charged out to save bravely and decisively.

This was a spirited encounter that, despite ending goalless, showcased quality football from both sides. Rovers will be proud of their midfield control and resolute defending, while Allenwood will feel unlucky not to have converted their late chances. Both teams walk away with a point, though each will feel they had the chances to seal all three. For the neutrals, it was a compelling and physical battle, full of tension and technical quality. A rematch between these two will be eagerly anticipated.

Derry Rovers AFC – Players of the Match: Alicia Kavanagh (4) – Defender

Allenwood Celtic AFC – Players of the Match: Chloe Donnelly (7) – Midfielder/Attacker A constant threat with her pace and creativity, Donnelly was involved in most of Allenwood's best chances.
