Divisional Cup Action !
Coill Dubh AFC 2 Newbridge Hotspurs FC 1
The Dubh’s advanced to the semi-finals of the Karina Donnelly Senior Cup with a powerful finish at Cusack Park against near neighbours Newbridge Hotspurs. A dull first half saw Coill Dubh barely manage a shot on target, as play centred around the midfield. The Dubh’s were denied an opening goal when a fine effort was cleared off the line. Moments later, Jay Devine's attempt went wide of the target. Just when a 0-0 halftime scoreline seemed certain, Hotspur took the lead when Noel Kelly picked up a rebound and fired home. The home side needed energy in midfield, and the long-awaited return of Jack O'Brien showed what Coill Dubh had been lacking in recent weeks. The bench made a huge difference, with Trevor McDonald, Cian MacMahon, and Jamie Gartland making a significant impact. Ryan Murran almost equalised, but his effort smashed off the crossbar, and Cian MacMahon's shot went just wide of the post. Coill Dubh was relentless in pursuit of a goal, and in the 89th minute, Eoin O'Reilly became the hero with a powerful header from close range off a corner to bring the game to extra time. The introduction of Gartland showcased his talent when he set up Jay Devine, who fired a low drive inside the keeper's right post. In the second half of extra time, Hotspur almost levelled the game, but the brilliance of Dubhs' keeper Luke Anderson, who pulled off a double save, kept them ahead. Coill Dubh comfortably saw out the remaining minutes for a deserved win. Coill Dubh's back five had solid games, and Jay Devine's great work rate was rewarded with a fine goal. Luke Anderson saved the day for the Dubh’s with some outstanding saves. Trevor McDonald, Cian MacMahon, and Jamie Gartland showed why they are highly regarded within the club. Ryan Murran also played well, but the man of the match was Jack O'Brien. Best for Hotspurs were Mikey Murphy, Tommy Walsh Scott O’Donoghue and Hotspurs Man of the Match Noel Kelly
