Leinster Heat Pumps Senior Division Focus.

Coill Dubh AFC 2-4 Clonmullion FC

The league leaders made the long trip up to Cusack Park for a late Friday night kick off and didn't take long to create the first chance.  A Jake Nicholl free kick just inside the halfway line picked out Shane Foley at the back post and he headed the ball back into the 6 yard box to Chris Chanders whose header went just over.

Two minutes later Rossy Cardiff was fouled just outside the box and Danny Thompson seen his free kick tipped over the bar by goalkeeper John Mangan. Jack O Brien and Lennon O Shaughnessy were battling hard to gain a foothold in the game but the visitors were in no mood to relinquish their dominance with Nathan Robinson pulling the strings in the middle and Mark Hughes and Jay Connell causing huge problems with their distribution from deep.  In the 23rd minute a wonderful diagonal from the aforementioned Hughes picked out Nicholl who expertly volleyed back into the penalty area where Joe Doran also volleyed his effort but it went just over the bar. Two minutes later Cardiff was again fouled just outside the box.

Up stepped Hughes who struck an unstoppable free kick into the top corner of the net that has to be in contention for goal of the season.  The power of the shot and the precision with which it found its target had to be seen to be believed.  Hughes became provider just before half time when he hit another pinpoint diag which was beautifully controlled with his left foot by Keelan Lacey and hit sweetly with his right to the bottom corner to make it 2 nil.

The home side started the second half much better and John McLoughlin had a free kick graze Evan Grattans crossbar after the impressive O Brien was fouled 20 yards out.  On the hour mark great interplay between Lee Doyle and Lacey set up Doran who's low shot went just wide. With 25 minutes remaining Foley and Nicholl combined well down the Dubhs right with the latter crossing into the area where the ever dangerous Chanders swept home with his left to make it 3 nil.

With 15 minutes remaining substitute Bryan Byrne won the ball on the edge of his own area and played a great ball to Doran who ran from just inside his own half into the box where he jinked inside Cian McMahon but his shot was well saved by Mangan but he could only parry it into the path of Lacey who tapped home from close range.  Clonmullion rang the changes and it seemed to upset their rhythm and a few minutes later Jake Smullen was adjudged to have been fouled on the end line by Foley. He picked himself up and made no mistake from the spot.

With only minutes remaining a mix up by the visitors in the centre circle allowed O Shaughnessy to advance unchallenged to just outside the box where he struck a thunderous shot to the top corner to make it 4 2.  This was a game where a team with years of experience met a very young and very talented team who will undoubtedly go on to claim many accolades.

The experience of Joe Bowers in defence and the enthusiasm of O Brien and O Shaughnessy and the willingness of the McMahons, Smullen and McLoughlin always tested Clonmullion’s resolve.  While the experience of Doyle and Foley at the back and the nous of Nicholl and Robinson in midfield and the pace of Thompson and Lacey out wide were instrumental in the Clonmullion victory.  But the Hughes performance with his calmness, distribution and organisation as well as a wonderful strike sets him apart from the rest. We are lucky to be witnessing a player of his calibre in the KDFL.

Clane United AFC 1-1 Caragh Celtic FC

Clane United and Caragh Celtic played out a gripping 1-1 draw in a contest that remained scoreless for the majority of the match before exploding into life in the final twenty minutes.  Both sides showcased defensive resilience, but a late surge from the hosts ensured the spoils were divided.

For much of the first hour, the defences reigned supreme. Both teams struggled to break the deadlock as the tactical battle intensified in the midfield.  It wasn't until the 71st minute that the first breakthrough arrived. Caragh Celtic took the lead when Scott O’Neill delivered a precise ball to Eoghan Merriman, who finished clinically to put the visitors 1-0 up. Trailing with less than ten minutes to play, Clane United threw players forward in a desperate search for an equalizer.

Their persistence was finally rewarded in the 85th minute. Jack Kelly turned provider, finding Rashdi Nsimba, who made no mistake in finding the back of the net to level the scores at 1-1. Despite a frantic final few minutes where both sides pushed for a winner, the match ended in a stalemate.

Man of the Match: Jamie Dunne (Caragh Celtic) The standout performer on the day was Caragh’s right-back, Jamie Dunne.  His defensive positioning and ability to nullify Clane’s wide threats were instrumental in keeping his side in the lead for so long, rightfully earning him the Man of the Match honours.

Newbridge Hotspurs FC 1-0 Arlington AFC

Hotspurs Grind Out Narrow Win Over Arlington

Newbridge Hotspurs welcomed Arlington to Sniggs Brogan Park for a tightly contested affair that saw the home side secure their second win in as many weeks.  While Newbridge entered the match buoyed by recent success, Arlington arrived with confidence following a resilient draw against Caragh, setting the stage for a physical and competitive battle. Newbridge Hotspurs settled into the game quicker, with Chris Higgins, Scott O’Donoghue, and Eoin McGrath providing a constant attacking threat in the opening fifteen minutes.

The first major opening arrived in the 25th minute when O’Donoghue floated a precise ball into the box. Chris Higgins met it with a powerful header, but an excellent save from the Arlington goalkeeper kept the game scoreless. The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 30th minute via a set-piece specialty. A long, dangerous throw-in from Robbie Higgins caused chaos in the Arlington penalty area.  After the ball was not fully cleared and bounced twice inside the box, Greg Kelly reacted quickest, calmly slotting the ball home to give Newbridge a 1-0 lead. Arlington nearly responded just before the interval. A loose ball fell to the Arlington left-back on the edge of the area, but Sean Higgins produced a vital save in the Newbridge goal to preserve the lead heading into the break.

The second half saw Newbridge Hotspurs control much of the play, seeking a second goal to kill off the contest.  Despite creating multiple opportunities, a combination of poor finishing and disciplined Arlington defending kept the margin at a single goal. Arlington, remaining fully in the contest, worked tirelessly all over the pitch. They pushed hard for an equalizer in the closing stages, showing great organization and matching Newbridge’s physicality.  However, the Hotspurs' defensive unit—marshalled by Sean Higgins in goal and a backline of Scott O’Connor, Shane Higgins, and Barry Doyle—stood firm to deal with every threat that came their way. Ultimately, Newbridge grounded out the result to claim all three points. Standout Performers, Newbridge Hotspurs FC:

Best for Newbridge were Robbie Higgins, whose long throw provided the winning assist and whose general play was influential throughout.  Sean Higgins was dependable in goal, while Tomas Hennessy who was named man of the match anchored the midfield. Up front, Chris Higgins and Scott O’Donoghue were constant thorns in the Arlington side. Arlington AFC. It was a strong team effort from the visitors, who remained competitive until the final whistle.  Luke McEvoy, Alex Dunne, and Tyrone Delaney led by example with battling performances, while Iain Higgins and Sudaysi Adour also stood out for their defensive work and tireless energy.
