Coill Dubh AFC 0-1 Clane United AFC
A depleted Coill Dubh side, missing no fewer than seven players, produced a spirited
display despite falling to a narrow 1–0 defeat against Clane United in Cusack Park.
Conditions were perfect for football, and while the result didn’t go Coill Dubh’s way, the
performance showed tremendous resilience and determination from a side operating with
just 13 available players.
As expected, Clane enjoyed the majority of possession, but it was Coill Dubh who created
the first real chance of the game. Joe Bowers, usually so reliable in front of goal, found
himself unmarked on the edge of the six-yard box but headed narrowly over. That
opportunity seemed to spark Clane into life, and they responded with two chances in
quick succession.
First, Ross Murphy was picked out by a superb cross-field pass from Cathal Geoghegan,
Murphy’s first touch was excellent, but he couldn’t keep his effort down and fired over the
bar. Soon after, Gavin Denton had an opportunity of his own but failed to trouble Mikie
Behan in the Coill Dubh goal.
Both defences were on top throughout the first half, with attacking opportunities limited. In
truth, neither goalkeeper was forced into making a save before the break. Clane would
have been frustrated by the stubborn Coill Dubh defence, marshalled superbly by Aidan
Gormley, John McLoughlin, Lennon O'Shaughnessy, and Cian MacMahon.
Coill Dubh will regret not settling into the second half quickly enough, as Clane capitalised
with what proved to be the decisive goal in the 47th minute. Excellent work from Andrew
Hyland down the left wing allowed him to dig out a dangerous cross into the box, and
Gavin Denton was perfectly placed at the back post to convert. The second half followed
a similar pattern to the first, with defences continuing to dominate and chances at a
premium. Coill Dubh came agonisingly close to snatching a deserved equaliser in the
closing moments, but Cillian Casey was unable to find the finish needed to rescue a
point.
With such limited options on the bench—and even regular goalkeeper Ryan Bagnall
spending 60 minutes playing up front—this was an incredibly demanding night for Coill
Dubh. Still, restricting Clane to a single goal highlighted just how close the gap is between
sides near the bottom and those higher up the table. Coill Dubh’s squad showed
immense grit, defensive discipline, and heart. A narrow defeat against a strong Clane
side when severely stretched for numbers is frustrating, but there is plenty in this
performance to build on.
Best for Coill Dubh were Lennon O'Shaughnessy, John McLoughlin and Man of the Match
Joe Bowers. Best for Clane United, Andrew Hyland, Ross Murphy
Clonmullion FC 3-0 Old Fort Celtic FC
League leaders Clonmullion FC maintained their grip on the top spot of the Senior
Division with a clinical 3-0 victory over local rivals Old Fort Celtic, who made the short trip
across the Laois border on Saturday evening. While the final scoreline suggests a
comfortable night for the table-toppers, Old Fort put in an encouraging performance,
dominating long stretches of possession but ultimately being undone by Clonmullion’s
ruthless efficiency in front of goal.
Old Fort started the brighter of the two sides, controlling the tempo early on. They were
agonizingly close to taking the lead in the eighth minute when Aaron Rafter skipped past
two defenders and unleashed a speculative 30-yard rocket. While Clonmullion keeper
Michael Lawless was beaten, the ball crashed off the woodwork and away to safety. Prior
to that, the hosts had threatened when Danny Thompson shot straight at Old Fort keeper
Dean Bland following a clever Cody Mulhall pass. But just as the visitors looked to be
building real momentum, Clonmullion responded with a devastating counter-attack. In the
sixth minute, Mark Hughes broke up an Old Fort attack and initiated a sweeping move
involving Mulhall and Chris Chanders. The ball found Thompson out wide, and his first-
time cross picked out Nathan Doyle at the back post to side-foot home from seven yards,
giving Clonmullion a 1-0 lead against the run of play.
Old Fort refused to back down and continued to press. However, they found Lawless in
inspired form. Around the half-hour mark, a curled Lee Carroll Talbot free-kick was
brilliantly parried by the Clonmullion shot-stopper, who quickly recovered to smother
Patryk Staniec’s follow-up effort. At the other end, Bland was equally busy, handling a
powerful downward header from Chanders off a Nathan Robinson set-piece and forcing
Thompson wide into the side netting after a superb Shane Foley long ball. Just before
the interval, Lawless was called into action once more, brilliantly tipping another
dangerous Carroll Talbot free-kick over the bar to ensure the hosts held a narrow lead at
the break.
The second half began with a moment of magic from Mulhall, whose dazzling run took
him past three Old Fort defenders, only for his shot to whistle just over the crossbar. Old
Fort responded with a chance of their own when Daniel Ntumba connected with a Brian
Smith cross, but Staniec could only head wide.
The pivotal moment of the match arrived on the hour mark. Lawless ignited a rapid
counter-attack with a quick kick-out to Robinson on the right wing. Robinson drilled a low
ball toward the box, where Mulhall executed a clever dummy, allowing the charging Chris
Chanders to coolly side-foot the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-0. Ten minutes
later, the league leaders effectively sealed the points. After winning a free-kick deep in
Old Fort territory, Robinson delivered a pinpoint cross into the mixer. Chanders out-
jumped the entire defense to powerfully head home his second of the evening, extending
the cushion to 3-0. Clonmullion threatened to add gloss to the scoreline late on. Robinson
was denied a certain goal by a superb, last-ditch tackle from Old Fort's Liam Og Brennan,
and Chanders was inches away from a hat-trick when he clipped the post following a neat
one-two between Lee Doyle and Keane Cully.
While Old Fort will feel aggrieved by the harshness of the final scoreline, they can take
plenty of positives from a performance where they competed excellently for long periods.
Clonmullion FC: Michael Lawless was superb in goal, making vital saves and initiating the
second goal. Mark Hughes anchored a rock-solid back four. Nathan Robinson was the
creative engine in midfield, Nathan Doyle shined on his seasonal debut, and Cody
Mulhall’s vision and work rate caused problems all night. Man of the Match honours,
however, go to Chris Chanders for his clinical two-goal display. Old Fort Celtic: Keeper
Dean Bland made several crucial interventions, while Byron McGuirk was outstanding at
right-back as the visitors' top performer. In midfield, Liam Brown, Lee Carroll Talbot, and
Aaron Rafter all impressed, while Patryk Staniec proved a constant handful upfront.
Arlington AFC 1-4 Kildare Town AFC
Kildare Town AFC picked up a commanding three points on Sunday morning with a
clinical 4-1 away victory over a spirited Arlington AFC side. While the hosts never
stopped competing and worked tirelessly until the final whistle, Kildare Town’s sharp
pressing, tactical depth, and ruthless edge in front of goal proved to be the difference.
Kildare Town pressed hard right from the kickoff, looking dangerous every time they
advanced into possession. Their early intensity paid dividends in the 17th minute when
Leon Tsang harassed the Arlington center-half into a costly error, forcing an unfortunate
own goal to break the deadlock and make it 1-0. Shortly after the opening goal, Kildare
suffered a blow when midfield general Kieran Sheedy was forced off due to injury.
However, his replacement, Jack Downes, stepped into the game to massive effect. Just
three minutes after the opener, Downes unlocked the Arlington defense with an intelligent
pass to Dylan Connolly, who finished with aplomb to double the visitors' advantage.
Despite finding themselves 2-0 down so early, Arlington continued to battle with immense
spirit, working hard to establish a foothold in the game against a well-organized Kildare
side.
Arlington started the second half with renewed attacking intent, asking plenty of questions
of the visitors' backline. However, Ian McDonnell in the Kildare goal and center-half Ryan
Farrell were in imperious form, repeatedly repelling the home side's advances. Arlington’s
persistence finally rewarded them in the 81st minute. A clever, well-rehearsed corner
routine found substitute Thobela Nazo—who made a highly positive impact off the
bench—to tap in at the near post and give the home side a lifeline.
Sensing a shift in momentum, Kildare’s Adam Downes and the tireless Robert Burke
wrestled back control of the midfield. It was Burke who delivered the decisive blow,
latching onto another delicate, defence-splitting pass from Jack Downes to finish calmly
and push the scoreline to 3-1. With the game entering its final stages, the Kildare bench
took responsibility to put the match completely out of reach. The tenacious Ross Lyons
anchored the midfield, while Colin Scanlon, making a welcome return from injury, played
a brilliant ball to Brandon O'Keeffe. Showing excellent composure deep into stoppage
time, O'Keeffe found the back of the net to wrap up a comprehensive 4-1 victory. Arlington
AFC: Despite the tough scoreline, the home side never stopped working. Ben McEvoy,
Jason Conlon, and Alex Dunne were the standout performers on the day for their work
rate and grit. Kildare Town AFC: Ryan Farrell was rock-solid at the back, while Adam
Downes controlled the tempo in the center of the park.
However, Man of the Match honors went to Robert Burke, who put in a tireless, complete
performance from the first minute to the last.
