Leinster Heat Pumps Senior Division.

Clane United AFC 2-2 Clonmullion FC

Mulhall Magic Retains Title for Clonmullion Despite Late Clane comeback.

Clonmullion officially retained their Leinster Heat Pumps Senior Division crown on an afternoon of blistering drama, securing the single point they required in a pulsating 2-2 draw against fierce title rivals Clane United, to claim the coveted title for the fifth time in six years.

Driven by a sensational brace from talisman Cody Mulhall, Clonmullion held a two-goal cushion until a chaotic closing sequence—marred by a red card and late unsavory scenes—saw Clane strike twice in stoppage time to salvage a draw, but ultimately fell short of denying the champions their coronation.

With everything hanging on the line, the opening 20 minutes evolved into an absorbing, high-caliber tactical war of attrition.  Both outfits showcased slick, vertical passing networks across the park, yet found clear-cut openings at an absolute premium due to two imperious backlines.

Clonmullion's defensive wall of Mark Hughes, Jay Connell, Shane Foley, and Lee Doyle gave away virtually nothing in central areas.  Down the other end, Clane's defensive rearguard of Jack Kelly, Mark Kelly, Thomas Hyland, and Nathan Carr matched them stride for stride.  In the engine room, Jake Nicholls and Keane Cully provided a bruising, disciplined midfield shield for the visitors, frustrating the forward probing of Clane's Wayne Murran and Killian Patchel.

Out wide, the battle raged with immense intensity. David Murphy and Nathan Doyle covered every blade of grass on the flanks for Clonmullion, while Josh McDonald and Cathal Geoghegan produced tireless, box-to-box shifts for Clane. The match provided its first major flashpoint inside nine minutes. Clonmullion earned a golden opportunity from twelve yards when the referee pointed to the spot, but Clane custodian Luke Anderson produced a stunning low dive to his left to deny Cody Mulhall’s spot-kick and keep his side level.

Mulhall, however, responded with absolute venom. In the 24th minute, David Murphy whipped a fine pass into his feet.  Cody Mulhall controlled the delivery instantly, turned, and smashed an unstoppable, world-class missile past Anderson into the top corner to put the champions-elect 1-0 ahead.

Clonmullion came out for the second half with championship authority, doubling their cushion in the 50th minute.  Nathan Doyle picked out Mulhall with an inch-perfect ball into feet; Cody Mulhall controlled with his back to goal, executed an exquisite turn, and drilled a lethal low strike into the bottom corner to make it 2-0 with his second of the afternoon. With Clonmullion's defence standing firm and Micheal Lawless rarely tested between the posts, the visitors appeared to be cruising toward a comfortable victory.

However, the contest exploded into chaos in the 85th minute. An unsavory on-pitch melee resulted in a straight red card for a Clonmullion player, dramatically shifting the psychological momentum for the final stages. Smelling blood against ten men, Clane threw caution to the wind.  In the 90th minute, the hosts were awarded a penalty, and Gavin Denton stepped up to smash the spot-kick home, breathing life back into the contest at 2-1. Just two minutes later, an almighty goalmouth scramble erupted inside the Clonmullion penalty box.

Showing predatory instincts, Gavin Denton pounced to fire home from six yards, securing his rapid-fire brace and leveling the scoreline at 2-2.  Despite the late frenzy, Clonmullion gathered their defensive lines for the remaining seconds to hear the final whistle and officially seal the point needed to secure the league title.

Clane United showed extraordinary resilience to battle back from the brink. Cathal Geoghegan delivered an immense shift up and down the left flank. Andrew Hyland brought non-stop energy to the forward line, and Gavin Denton was heroic—fighting tirelessly despite being isolated for long stretches and earning his reward with a crucial stoppage-time brace.

For the newly crowned back-to-back champions, Jay Connell and Mark Hughes were rocks at the back, Nathan Doyle was a relentless menace on the wing, and Jake Nicholls worked his socks off to disrupt Clane’s rhythm in the middle third. However, the afternoon belonged definitively to Cody Mulhall, who took home the Man of the Match honours.  Mulhall brushed off his early penalty miss in champion fashion, proving completely unplayable for the Clane defence and scoring two magnificent, individual goals to seal the trophy for Clonmullion.
